YOLANDA'S STORY

For as long as she can remember, Yolanda has been drawn to the magic that can unfold in one's own kitchen. Inspired by her mother, a culinary arts graduate, Yolanda has set out to follow in her footsteps, remaining eager to ignite her own path in the culinary world. For her, cooking is more than just a skill: it’s a legacy. But pursuing her passion has not been without significant challenges, those no young person should have to endure. Ultimately, when Yolanda's family didn't have the resources to support her in her journey to adulthood, Ignite stepped in. Today, Yolanda is a member of Ignite's Belfort House, a transitional living community for homeless youth located in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood. Young people like Yolanda stay at Belfort House for up to 18 months, and are engaged in productive activities employment readiness, life skills training, and educational support. With the help of Ignite's team of caring staff members, Yolanda has created an Individual Action Plans which serve as a road map to help her achieve their goals while residing at Belfort House. Ignite became her foundation, providing guidance through hard times and encouragement when she needed it most.

“Ignite helped and guided me when my family didn’t, and I am truly thankful,” she shares. The staff not only offered practical support but also instilled in her the confidence to push forward. “They corrected me, gave me advice, and reminded me that I can do anything I set my mind to.” “I can do anything I set my mind to.”

Despite the plethora of resources that Ignite offers, balancing school and work proved difficult, with late shifts often making early mornings a struggle. Managing time wisely and maintaining a work-life balance became daily battles. Yet, through it all, Yolanda remained steadfast thanks to her own determination and the support of Ignite staff. “I stay motivated by knowing that I'm working towards and achieving my goals,” she says. “There is always something to be done, and by taking care of my responsibilities as a young woman, I am becoming an adult.”

Now, as she looks ahead to her future in the culinary world, she reflects on the wisdom she would share with her younger self: “In life, you have to keep a positive mindset and know that God is here. There are lessons you have to learn, and you're going to have to go through so many doors to get what you want.” With Ignite’s unwavering support and her own resolve, Yolanda is stepping through those doors, one by one, on her way to her own home and future full of promise.
